For two decades, pianist Bugge Wesseltoft’s It’s Snowing On My Piano has been a sort of alt-Christmas favourite, conjuring up impressions of winter without getting into all the ‘jolly holidays’ clichés. The title of this set might suggest it’s more of the same – even the label categorises it as ‘Piano Jazz, Norwegian Jazz, Christmas Jazz’ – but there’s rather more to Everybody Loves Angels, although there is the same kind of ethereal quality to Wessletoft’s playing. From a Bach chorale to ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, Hendrix’s ‘Angel’ and Mick and Keef’s ‘Angie’, this set just about epitomises the term ‘lightness of touch’, and is blessed with a quality of recording on a par with Benny Andersson’s Piano, meaning it’s of a similar demonstration quality. Not everyone will be sold on the slightly ‘easy listening’ sound here, but it simply drips skill and care. AE

Comparing this (Steinway) piano with Andersson’s is instructive, for however it was recorded in Norway’s LofotKatedralen, the mastering at Holland Sound is pure analogue – note the increased noise. Super clean, still. PM
