Australian-born, US-based and highly acclaimed guitarist Angus is here joined by compatriot Sam Anning and American drummer Ari Hoenig in a simple set as unpretentious as it is cleanly captured, but which shows off just how tightly the three lock together as a fighting unit. Almost all of the tracks are self-composed, with the exception of a cover of Oasis hit ‘Wonderwall’, and both the recording and the mix are focused, detailed and above all capable of decent dynamics and punch. Inventive, pacey and toe-tapping, this is nothing short of captivating from start to finish – yes, even that Oasis cover! Treated to a wide-open, thrilling and excellent sound, this recording gives all three musicians space to breathe and show what they can do both individually and as an ensemble, rather than falling into the ‘artist plus backing’ trap. Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne, Australia caters for analogue recording, which looks like the route adopted by Angus’s engineers. So this (clean) mix of guitar, bass and drums is limited by tape to ~28kHz before encoding at 96kHz. PM
